With forest nook you have base to explore.
Bachkovo Monastery. A must see! The second largest Bulgarian monastery is about 30 minutes drive from forest nook. On all sides, the monastery is surrounded by the Rhodopi mountain, which together with its size and ancient spirit make is one of the most visited monasteries in Bulgaria. The Monastery neighbourhood is home to dozens of small shops and stalls with restaurants to both sides of the gates. You can find here everything that grows or is being manufactured in the Rhodopi mountain – rare herbs, home-made jams of wild fruit, yogurt and white cheese made of sheep or buffalo's milk to locally produced textiles and wool carpets.
Known as "the emerald eyes of the Rhodopes", Smolyan Lakes are a short drive from the town of Smolyan (worth stopping off for a brew at the many open terrace café bars). Of the seven lakes the highest is named by locals as "The Muddy Lake". Don’t let the name fool you, as “Muddy” is the deepest and most beautiful of all the lakes. Also close by, overlooking two lakes perched on a small plateau is the chapel of the Holy Spirit which is still in use.
A short 15 km drive from your Forest Nook Villa towards the picturesque town of Shriko Luka lies a wonderful subterranean world of the Famous Yagodina Cave, the longest cave in Bulgaria at 8 km and at certain points 5 stories high!
Sometimes spooky, always fascinating the cave is lit up offering views of the beautiful rock formations, with many labyrinths and abysses. A special path through the cave offers the opportunity to see the wonderful underground world formed in the course of millions of years. Lighting illuminates the mysterious formations: draperies, pipe-like stalactites, cave pearls, “leopard’s skin” and hanging stalactites, visible in all their weird and wonderful glory. There is also a unique prehistoric settlement in the caves dating back from the late eneolythis – approximately 4000 BC with several examples of fireplaces, pottery and artefacts still in place.
Devin Spa. One thing many of our guests recommend is a 35km trip down the road to Devin; a spa town of some renown. Devin boasts several mineral water springs situated among scenic hills and has a balneology sanatorium don’t you know (spa medicine – we looked it up on Google) and an open-air mineral beach.
So here’s the science bit: Devin’s mineral waters are famous for their therapeutic properties due to their considerable mineralization, relatively high content of fluorine, mild acidity and high temperature. The town offers spa and climatic treatments and has many modern facilities for you to revitalise your system. If you really want to treat yourself with spa and massages, open air mineral pools, mud treatments, antistress programs; even acupuncture then the half hour trip from Forest Nook is just the ticket.
